LA BOQUERÍA
Rambla 91 (Barrio Gótico)
open monday to saturday 8:00 - 20:30h
The BOQUERÍA market directly on the Ramblas is one of Barcelonas most important sights and hundreds of tourists visit the traditional fresh food market every day. The brilliant colours of fruits and veggies from all over the world, the penetrant smell of the fish section with sea food you may have never seen before in your live and the delicious looks of the freshly prepared tapas are extremely interesting not only for tourists. A lot of locals shop in the BOQUERÍA because of the variety and the competitive prices.
You may not leave the BOQUERÍA without trying one of the fresh fruit juices. If you avoid the first row and go deeper into the maze you find the same juices for 1,00€ each.
LA CERERÍA
Baixada de Sant Miguel 3
Metro: Jaume I
open: Tuesday to Saturday 13:00-24:00, Sunday 13:00-17:00, Mondays closed
In the very heart of Gótico, the Gothic Quarter, you will find LA CERERIA. This place has been recommended to me several times, before I had the opportunity to try it.
The 2 story restaurant emits a bohemian flair and their menu specialises on vegetarian food apt for all kind of food intolerances.
LA CERERIA is run by Argentinians and their menu offers unpretentious but fresh dishes: Lots of different options for everyone, tasty starters, big main courses and homemade desserts. One of the signature dishes, the savoury crêpes (see picture) can be ordered with different vegetarian fillings - homemade with ecological ingredients.
The place has a big room downstairs, which - upon reservations - can be used as a cozy setting for smaller or medium sized group dinners. While in summer, the small terrace in the yard might be the better option.
- total on bill: around 20€ including drinks
DE TAPADILLO
C/ de Fonollar 8 (Born)
Metro: Jaume I
open daily 13:00- 23:30h
This place was a recommendation of a work friend and he told me "go there quick before it goes famous & busy"! Thank you Xavi, for this good lead, because I really enjoyed the relaxed and cozy atmosphere in that place. It's kind of a basement restaurant, but the decoration and the table setting is just lovely. And of course the food...the food!!!
Take a look at the pictures and you can see some of the plates I tried there: Patatas con Queso de Cabrales (Spanish Blue cheese), Merluza hake fish, salmon tartar & Guiness cake.
The TAPADILLO is the perfect place for dinner with friends & family and the staff is really nice and happy to recommend you a good bottle of wine.
- total on bill: around 20€ p.P. including wine
RASOTERRA
C/del Palau 5 (Barrio Gótico)
Metro: Jaume I
open Tuesdays to Sundays: 13:00- 16:00h & 19:00 - 23:00h
Organic, seasonal and local.
The gastronomic experience at RASOTERRA is extraordinary: Slow food, seasonal vegetarian & vegan dishes in a really light and open space in a hidden street in the heart of Gótico neigborhood.
They prepare each dish with fresh and local ingredients with great attention to detail. "Km 0" stands for local production: most of the products are from producers in Catalunya and apparently they also keep a garden where they crop some of the fruits and vegetables.
The flavours are unique and the staff is very attentive and happy to help out with any further information or to recommend a bottle of wine (they have a quite impressive long wine list, even sorted by aromas).
If you have a moment, you should take time to read the 'manifest' on their website here where they explain the philosophy of the restaurant and why they are serving the food they do. And for example why they serve filtered tab water instead of mineral bottled water as it is a much more ecological option.
When having dinner you can chose if you want to try the vegetarian (or vegan) tasting menu (30€) or order separate tapas. Please note the tasting menu option only works if the entire table choses it.
- total on bill: á la carte around 30€ p.p. incl. wine
NEWS: The menu of RASOTERRA is 100% vegan now! They changed their dished to full cruelty-free after re-opening after Covid19-lockdown in June 2020!
EL XAMPANYET
C/ Montcada 22 (Born)
Metro: Jaume I
open monday to saturday 12:00 - 15:30h & 19:00 - 23:00h, sundays only until 15:30h
This place is somehow very famous and always packed with hungry and thirsty tourists and locals.
Their homemade white cava is nice and fresh but in my opinion no comparision to the rosé Can Paixano from the CHAMPAGNERIA.
The big assortment of tapas is very seafoody and they serve a lot of canned mussles - which is a delicatessen in Spain! But I tried a plate of sundried tomatoes with sheep's cheese and it was also simply delicious.
If you can find a spot it is a great place to stop for a drink and a pica-pica (small snacks) when visiting the historic old town, Born or the Picasso museum.
- total on bill: 10-15€ for two glasses of cava and a seafood tapa
BAR CELTA PULPERÍA
C/ Mercé 9 (Barrio Gótico) & C/ de la Princesa 50 (Born)
Metro: Drassanes/Jaume I
open daily: 12:00 - 0:00h (Born: 8:30-0:00h)
This unpretentious and inexpensive Galician tapas bar is an easy stop to have lunch or dinner when strolling through the old town of Barcelona.
The CELTA with it's very humble and rustic interior is especially famous for it's octopus 'pulpo' - a Galician delicatesse. The tentacles of the mollusk are being cooked and chopped onto wooden plates, just seasoned with salt and sweet paprika. Alongside with the pulpo you can order typical Spanish tapas, for example a slice of their enormous tortilla de patatas.
The atmosphere is always buzzing throughout the day, you might have to have some patience with the seating and the service.
- total on bill: around 15 € p.P. for shared tapas and beers for lunch
SATAN'S COFFEE CORNER
C/ de l'Arc de Sant Ramon de Call 11 (Barrio Gótico)
Metro: Jaume I or Liceu
open 8:00 - 18:00h (sunday from 10:00h), Tuesdays closed
If you manage to find this hidden place in the small and wrinkled streets of Barrio Gótico you will find a relaxed, straight forward coffee shop.
SATAN'S has no terrace, just some benches, tables and stools in the open space with big windows where the coffee is prepared right in the middle.
The limited menu offers quality beans, that are transformed into excellent expresso, filter coffee or cold brew. It is more expensive that the regular coffee in town, but it's also better.
I didn't try the food yet, but I am under the impression that this place is quite a good idea to go and have breakfast.
SALTERIO
C/Sant Domènec del Call 4
Matro: Jaume I (Born/Gótico)
open daily 13:00- 01:00h
Places like that are very rare in Barcelona: The SALTERIO is a small, warm restaurant in neighbourhood of Barrio Gótico offering mostly teas, Turkish coffee and a small variety of vegetarian dishes.
The space is very limited and usually packed with people squeezing to the small living room tables sipping on a cup of tea. And yes: the tea is amazing! You have so many different options from flavoured black tea, to moroccan mint to different blends of with green or red leaves.
They also offer a short menu with very surprising food: the speciality of the place is the Sardo, traditional vegetarian flatbread from island of Sardinia, with different toppings.
The service takes it's time: Such the teas and the dishes need their time to get prepared, so you better be not in a hurry.
- total on bill: 2,50-3€ for an individual can of tea
MOSQUITO
C/ Carders 46 (Borne)
Metro: Jaume I
open tuesday to sunday 13:00- 01:00 & monday 19:30 - 01:00h
This tiny asian restaurant in the Born neighbourhood got famous for it's homemade dumplings (dim sum) and their authentic asian tapas. Actually it has been quite hyped, thats why you can't do a reservation for dinner. If you show up early (on Spanish timetable that means around 9pm) the chances might be good to get a table within 30min or less.
When you get the simple paper menu you can chose between about 20 different tapas, which are inspired by Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese cuisine. According to their website they prepare their noodles and dumplings with local organic flour.
Apart from a very small wine selection the MOSQUITO offers quite a big variety of international beers & craftbeers.
On the picture: Cabbage salad (spicy Kimchi) & langostino dumplings. Both very tasty!
- total on bill: 15-20€ per person incl. wine and shared tapas
BENDITO PECADO
C/de Comerc 8 (Born)
Metro: Arc de Triompf
opening hours: Tuesdays to Sunday 10:00-19:00h
BENDITO PECADO is a very popular Venezuelan bakery shop. It is very small and you can either order stuff over the counter and take it away of sit on one of the few small tables in the cramped inside eating area. Eventhough, the place is perfect for a full breakfast - they prepare fresh juices, too.
The Arepas there are amazing, fully stuffed with delicious Latin cheese and other ingredients, and you can get vegetarian options, too.
They expanded and opened a proper restaurant, BENDITO PECADO LATIN FOOD (C/Princesa 53), just around the corner, which opens for dinner, too. They have the same delicious Arepas from the bakery but also offer a lot of bigger elaborated latin american dishes, such als pabellón or patacones.
- arepas aprox. 8€
PIM PAM BURGER
C/ Sabateret 4 (Born)
Metro: Jaume I
open every day: 13:00- 0:00h
This downtown Burger shop in Born is a perfect destination on an empty stomach. The freshly prepared hamburgers with natural ingredients are full of flavour and rather big. You can eather stay to eat at the counter tables or get your burger to take away.
Of course there is also a vegetarian or vegan option available: The vegan patty made of tofu, eggplant & zucchini is deep fried, not grilled as their meaty counterparts but super juicy and with the fresh salad and special sauce (not vegan!) it is just perfect.
- total on bill: ~8 € 'Vegetal' burger
HAPPY PILLS
C/Arcs 6 (Barri Gòtic)
Metro: Plaça Catalunya & Jaume I
open Monday to Saturday: 10:00- 21:00h
Are you looking for a remedy for instant happiness or against sundays without (or with!!) football?
The colorful jellies at the HAPPY PILLS store are the perfect solution for every sweet tooth. You just pick the bottle in the size you want/need and fill it just however you want mixing the big
variety jellies and gummi bears. And if you have a friend who is a pharmacist, a doctor or a hypochondriac) they will just love this funny present.
By the way: The funny labels are available in spanish and english.
RABIPELAO
C/de la Mercé 26 (Barri Gòtic) & C/ Riera alta 50 (Rawalistan)
Metro: Drassanes & Sant Antoni
open from Monday to Sunday: 20:30-3:00h (Gòtic) & 19:30-3:00h (Raval)
On this point I must be biased: The RABIPELAO is my favorite bar in Barcelona!
After discovering it I 've been to it several times a week and I still take every single friend who comes to visit to have at least one Guarapita drink with me.
The Rabi is a venezuelan cocktail bar with by now three locations in Barcelona: the original cocktail bar in downtown Barrí Gòtic, the 'Rabipeladita' in Raval and the spacious and more quiet one in Gràcia. I like them all, though due to it's location the Rabipeladita in Raval is the most centric one.
The Rabi offers a whole big list of different rums from all over the caribean. Also you can also order venezuelan tapas and small dishes such as empanadas, ceviche and frejoles.
The cocktails have reasonable prices and are freshly prepared. Besides...before 23:00h you pay 1€ less on cocktails.
KOKU KITCHEN
C/ Comerc 29 (Born)
Metro: Barceloneta/Jaume I
This is not a vegetarian restaurant - in fact they are specialized on Ramen which is a pork-based asian soup. But I added this place because it is actually one of the few that offer a veggie alternative.
The KOKU KITCHEN is a quite curious place in the basement of an old town building in the El Born neighborhood. In the upper floor the same owner has the "buns" place (asian steamed burgers) and so they divide the businesses and costumers.
The Ramen & Gyoza bar is quite tiny, raw and always loud and hot (due to the steaming bowls of hot ramen soup). If you get there and made it through the waiting list on the blackboard you will probably have to share your table with other hungry Ramen fans.
I tried the 'regular' veggie-Ramen - there is also a spicy, hot one. The bowls are really big, so you might struggle if you also want to try some of the gyozas (japanese dumplings).
- total on bill: 17€ for veggie Ramen, shared gyozas & a glass of wine
365
C/Princesa 14 (Born)
Metro: Jaume I
open every day 6:00 - 22:00h
The 365 is a bakery chain and a coffeeshop which you can already find on several locations in Barcelona. The variety and the quality of the products are quite good and the prices very reasonable (Donuts 2x1 1,20€).
The shop in Calle Princesa has a very spacey area where you can sit on chairs or sofas and enjoy your coffee. It is also a very recommendable breakfast spot in the Born neighbourhood.
- total on bill: < 5€ for a sandwich or a piece of pastry and a milk coffee
Costa Pacífico
Plaza de Sant Augustí (Born)
Metro: Jaume I
open mondays to wednesday: 13:00- 16:00h & 20:00- 0:00h, thursday to sunday continuly
This place has been quite a lucky discovery for me. In the depths of Born, on plaza ..., the COSTA PACÍFICO serves one of the best tacos I have ever tried in Barcelona. Well, I might not be completely impartial in this point: As I don't eat meat, which is usually an essential ingredient of the Mexican dish, I really felt for the seafood alternative at COSTA PACÍFICO.
If I remember correctly the entire menu doesn't include any meat, but indeed some veggie options.
As it's name let conclude, the Cevichería Mexicana serves up different kinds of ceviches, small pieces of raw fish marinated in lime or lemon juice, with onions and spices, from the classic one (see picture) to the spicy "Aguachiles", marinated with different hot, Mexican chilie peppers.
But back to my favorite taco. The Tacos Governador (2u/7€) are a wild mix of flavours: tortilla with langostinos in a sauce made of black beans, cheese & huitlacoche mushrooms & finished up with some fresh coriander.
The best way to try the different options at COSTA PACÍFICO is to share different of the medium sized portions, tapas style. Best accompanied with a michelada, the Mexican beer of your choice spiced up with a savoury Mexican sauce.
Depending on the hour you might have to get on the waiting list for a table, especially if you want to sit on the sunny outside terrace.
- total on bill: around 25€ each for shared ceviche, tacos & beer
BORMUTH
C/ del Rec 31 (Born)
Metro: Jaume I
open every day 12:30 - 1:30h, friday & saturday until 2:30h
The BORMUTH is a RestoBar right in the heart of the Borne neighborhood.
They have a small terrace and a quite spacious inside, but any though it is always packed with people and you might have to wait some minutes to get a table, especially if you go with a group.
The BORMUTHs menu includes a variety of tapas to share which are quite tasty and reasonably priced. But in my opinion, due to the noise inside, I prefer the BORMUTH for drinks and pica-pica instead of for dinner.
Recommendations: Vermut rojo (2,10€) + Tapa de cazón en adobo (6€)
ELDISET
C/ Antic de Sant Joan 3 (Born)
Metro: Jaume I
open daily 19:00 - 2:00h, Friday & Saturday until 3:00h
www.eldiset.com (No reservations)
This gastro bar in El Born neighbourhood is the perfect place to go for a glass of wine, an aperitivo or a light dinner with friends, your date or colleagues. The set up of the ELDISET is modern but also warm & cozy.
There is a wide range of Catalan and Spanish wines, also available by the glass (around 4€ each). They also offer cocktails and a selection of creative & fresh tapas.
The place is not very spacious, and though on weekend nights it use to be quite packed the service is always welcoming and friendly.
Don't trust Tripadvisor, trust me!
Hi, my name is Kristin.
I'm from Germany but for over ten years I have been living, working and eating in Barcelona. Receiving a lot of friends from all over the world I always have been asked for references and recommendations where to enjoy a good meal or having a drink in the city.
