Temple of Tacos

LA GÜERITA MEXICANA

C/ Manso 53 (Sant Antoni)

Metro: Sant Antoni

open wednesday to mondays 13:30-00:30H , tuesdays closed

LA GÜERITA MEXICANA  is our latest discovery and just a few weeks on business (date: 04/2019) in Sant Antoni neighbourhood.

We were pleasantly greeted by the owner of this Taquería, la Güerita, who named the place after her proper nickname: the Blondie.

The food is simple & very tasty and the value is excellent. The vegan tacos al pastor (in the picture) were made from roasted eggplant. I enjoyed everything I tasted. We simply could not resist to order tacos, although I would have loved to try the veggie “tortita” sandwich. Guess that I have to go back there to try it very soon!

- total on bill:  around 15€ for vegan tacos & michelada beer

Vermuth Tasting & More

LA MARI OLLERO

C/ Calabria 5 (Sant Antoni/Poblesec)

Metro: Poble Sec

open 11:00-0:00h, Fridays and Saturdays until 01:00h

LA MARI offfers delicious Andalusian tapas and dishes, but let´s be honest, you should come here for the vermuth!

They have an amazing assortment of different vermuths which you can order a sampler with the description of each to try different types and if you like, directly buy an entire bottle off their shelf.

The decoration of the place is very nice and the staff is super friendly, i really have to come back to try some more of their tapas...and  vermuths, of course.

- vermuth degustation: 4 small glasses and a tapa for 8€

Delicious Carbs

Bar Fidel

C/ de Ferlandia 24 (Raval)

Metro:  Sant Antoni/Pl. Universitat

open monday to saturday 13:00- 23:00h; sundays 13:00-17:00 & 19:30-24:00h

This place is really humble option:

Price value is excellent, if you don’t expect haute cuisine. Down-to-earth tapas and an enormous selection of ‘bocatas’, the Catalan word for sandwiches with all different kind of ingredients. If you don’t mind greasy, then you should try the ‘patatas bravas’.

The location between Raval and Sant Antoni it really convenient if you are strolling in the center.

The decoration is just as rustic and simple as the food: a mainly window-less space with quite a few tables. It’s the perfect place for a cheap lunch/dinner or an informal hang-out to have beers and snacks with friends.

- total on bill: <10€ p.P. for beers & tapas

NOTE: The picture is from Google. Please excuse, next time i'll take a decent photo myself.

Peace of conscience

TERESA CARLES

C/Jovellanos 2 (Raval)

Metro: Plaça Universitat

open every day: 9:00- 23:30h

www.teresacarles.com/tc

When you enter this vegetarian restaurant in Raval you feel like entering a greengrocer's shop. The counter and the open kitchen are decorated with a lot of baskets filled with fresh vegetables they actually seem to use for cooking.

Apart from a variety of starters and salads at THERESA CARLES they cook a lot of pasta with traditional elements. Unlike a lot of other vegetarian or vegan restaurants they do not cook with a whole lot of oriental spices but concentrate on mediterranian cuisine. The portions are medium-sized and you might need a dessert.

In the picture: heart-shaped ricotta ravioli with tomatoes and mozzarella di buffalo.

- total on bill: around 25€ per person including wine or juice

Old Style Bodega

BODEGA D'EN RAFEL

Carrer de Manso 52 (Sant Antoni)

Metro:  Sant Antoni

open mondays to fridays 10:00- 23:00h, saturday until 16:00h, sunday closed

sign of Bodega d'en Rafel

This very authentic bodega close to the Sant Antoni metro station serves beer, drinks (vermuth!) and an assortment of spanish and catalan tapas. The 'tortilla de patatas' is simple but extremely delicious.

It is always very crowded and noisy - I think it is almost imposible to get a table on thursday or friday night - that's why I defineatly recommend de RAFEL more for a pre-party-drink with friends than for dinner.

And don't be surprised if a local abuelo greybeard complains to you about stealing his usual spot.

NOTE: Rafel, the original owner of this place retired in 2023. Luckily after many struggles they found new managers that wanted to keep the essence of the place. Rafel still comes by to say Hola every day.

instagramable Brunch

TRÓPICO

C/ Marques de Barbera 24 (Raval)

Metro: Liceu

open daily: 10:00 - 24:00h, Fridays & Saturdays until 2:00

The location of this restaurant in a hidden street in Raval is centric and the space itself is very nice: The big main room at the back is full of natural light and if you can't find space there in the hall and in the entrance are also a few small tables close to the bar.

But most certainly, people come here because of the food. The flavours and the colorful appearance of the dishes are - there is no other way to say it - tropically!

The consists in  mostly latin american standards like arepas, ceviche and Peruvian dishes like causa limeña & aji de gallina. But also mainstream brunch classics cannot miss: pancakes, eggs benedict ect.

Veggie (no vegan) and gluten-free dishes are signalised in the menu, but the staff is also open to do modifications (I ordered eggs benedict dish without ham).

The food is not outstanding, but it's super tasty and very good value. What I really enjoyed was the juice: watermelon coconut water (in the picture).

- total on bill: aprox. 15€ p.p. for juice & shared brunch dishes

La vida es rosa

ROSA DE RAVAL

C/del Angeles 6 (Raval) & Via Laietana (Barri Gòtic)

Metro:  Liceu & Plaça Catalunya & Jaume I

open from Monday to Sunday: 13:00-1:30h

www.rosaraval.com

Starting with the most important fact here: delicious cocktails for 3,50€!

The ROSA DE RAVAL is a very colorful and lovely decorated mexican bar that serves food and cheap but very tasty cocktails.

The restaurant & bar has two different locations in the city centre: the Rosa Negra en Vía Laietana y the Rosa de Raval. I recommend the Rosa de Raval just infront of the MACBA (contemporary art museum) though it's the smaller one and you might risk a little queue. Although the food might not be the most creative nor the most authentic mexican the lively atmosphere and the yummy daiquiris and mojitos are more than convincing to visit be Rosa de Raval for a perfect start into a barcelonian party night out.

Ready to meet the green fairy?

MARSELLA

C/Sant Pau 65 (Raval)

Metro:  Drassanes

open every day: 18:00- 3:00h

La MARSELLA can be a very bad place... (hangover-wise). But at the same time it is a very good place, for those who did not come to get drunk asap but for those who want to have a glass of absinth chatting with a long lost friend and just enjoy the unique atmosphere in this old, very authentic absinth bodega.

Following the ritual the waiter hands you your glass of green liqueur accompanied by a small bottle of water, a spoon and a sugar cube. The drinks cost around 3 or 4€.

Mexican Desire

EL PACHUCO

C/ de Sant Pau 110 (Raval)

Metro:  Parallel

open every day 13:30 - 3:00

The PACHUCO is a miniature mexican gastro bar in the center of Raval.

You order by noting your dishes & drinks on a paper menu and hand it in to the waiters. Quite a big deal is the popular mexican spiced beer 'michelada' and you can choose to combine the substantial mixture with the brand of beer of your choice.

A plate of nachos costs nearly 12 Euros but it's totally worth it (see picture) - even if you order the vegetarian option, missing the chicken. The homemade corn chips are covered with black beans, sour cream, guacamole, coriander and a loooot of cheese. This is not a starter, it's a full dish.

In general the dishes are very big and the savory michelada beer does the rest to make you leave full and happy.

IMPORTANT: You should be prepared to wait for a table, or a place on the counter for at least 30 min and since the place is quite small the atmosphere inside is quite buzzing and you might have limited space to eat.

- total on bill: around 15€ per person (they accept cash only!)

NEWS: Due to the success, the owners opened a second restaurant in El Gótico in 2019, which is called LA PACHUCA! The menu only slightly differs but the place is more spacious & even if you have to calculate some waiting time anyhow, you might have a cocktail or a Michelada at the bar in the meantime. IMPORTANT: You can only pay cash here, too.

LA PACHUCA: C/ d'en Carabassa 19 (metro: Drassanes)

A cheap & healthy lunch

VEGGIE GARDEN

C/ des Àngels 3 (Raval)

Metro: Universitat /Liceu

open every day: 12:30- 23:30h

This straight vegan restaurant just close to the MACBA museum and the ROSA DE RAVAL is known for its' reasonable lunch offer: 9,25 € for a three course menu including a drink.

The dishes are very extravagant and prepared with a lot of oriental spices.
The decoration of the VEGGIE GARDEN is very colorful, it's always loud and busy. They have two floors inside and in summer a few tables outside in the street.

- total on bill: 9,25€ for lunch menu

Is it a dog or a piggy? - Un rabipelao!

logo Rabipelao

RABIPELAO

C/de la Mercé 26 (Barri Gòtic) & C/ Riera alta 50 (Rawalistan)

Metro:  Drassanes & Sant Antoni

open from Monday to Sunday: 20:30-3:00h (Gòtic) & 19:30-3:00h (Raval)

On this point I must be biased: The RABIPELAO is my favorite bar in Barcelona!

After discovering it I 've been to it several times a week and I still take every single friend who come to visit to have at least one Guarapita drink with me.

The Rabi is a venezuelan cocktail bar with by now three locations in Barcelona: the original cocktail bar in downtown Barrí Gòtic, the 'Rabipeladita' in Raval and the spacious and more quiet one in Gràcia. I like them all, though due to it's location the Rabipeladita in Raval is the most centric one.

The Rabi offers a whole big list of different rums from all over the caribean. Also you can also order venezuelan tapas and small dishes such as empanadas, ceviche and frejoles.

The cocktails have reasonable prices and are freshly prepared.
